<p>When you book a holiday cottage in Charlestown, you’ll find yourself in one of Cornwall’s most picturesque villages, lined with traditional fishermen’s cottages, boutique shops and much-loved restaurants. Strolling around the 18th-century port is like stepping back in time, which is why it has made appearances in period pieces Poldark, Alice in Wonderland and Hornblower. </p>
<p>Unlike many places in Cornwall, Charlestown is still relatively unspoilt, so if you want a real taste of Cornwall’s history, book a holiday home here and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Built by entrepreneur Charles Rashleigh (hence the name) in the late 1700s to support clay mining and fishing industry, it retains an air of Georgian elegance. It’s easy to imagine ships setting sail from Charlestown in its heyday, taking their cargo of clay around Britain to feed the growing pottery business and fishing boats bustling off along the coast at dawn. </p>
<p>As well as the quaint harbour, there are rugged beaches and top restaurants nearby and it’s a great base to explore the nearby Eden Project before returning to a cosy fireside back at your Charlestown cottage.</p>
