If you want a car free break, Brockenhurst is one of the best places to stay in the New Forest. It has a railway station in the heart of the village and branch line to the Georgian marine town of Lymington. London is just a 90 minute trip – perfect for a bolt hole weekend away.
Brockenhurst is in the centre of the New Forest. It’s a large, traditional English village displaying thatched cottages, quaint little lanes and gorgeous chocolate box picture perfect scenery. It’s a hotspot for visitors and locals to gather. It’s one of the largest villages in the area, yet its managed to preserve its countryside appeal and homely charm without the trappings of commercialism. The vibe in the village is a gentle pace of life akin to how a generation lived fifty years ago. There’s no huge superstore, instead you will find a large selection of shops selling everything you’ll need for a holiday including grocer, butcher, baker, village post office and chemist as well as an array of interesting shops selling beautiful gifts, books and hobby crafts.
The most famous residents of the village are the free roaming New Forest ponies, cattle and donkeys. They are often seen around the village, at garden gates and in the high street peeping in to the shops in the hope of a carrot or two. Visitors love the novelty of shopping alongside four legged friends.
There are lots of great photo opportunities in and around the village. Head to the ford, known as ‘The Watersplash’ at the bottom of the high street. You’ll often come across ponies and donkeys stopping off for a drink on their way to graze on the open forest which surrounds the village.
During warmer months’ visitors can head to a pretty picnic spot at Balmer Lawn. There’s lots of grass to lay out on as well as a shingle beach with shallow water overlooking the Lymington River – a great family spot!
It’s worth taking a look at the oldest church in the New Forest - St. Nicholas Parish Church which dates back to AD737. The church yard is just as fascinating. You’ll see an enormous Yew Tree to the left of the south entrance porch, that’s estimated to be over 1,000 years old. This is also a great spot to see a thick carpet of bluebells in the spring. Not far from the high street is the village hall which has a busy calendar of events throughout the year for locals and visitors to enjoy.
If you fancy some horseback riding, Brockenhurst Riding Stables based at the New Forest Activity Centre just outside the village have a great reputation. To hire bikes pop into Cyclexperience at the railway station, they have a large choice of bikes, electric bikes, tandems, tag-a-longs and children’s seats. There are lots of trails, routes and tracks from the village for bikes rides or walkers wanting anything from a short stroll to a daylong hike out in to the forest – pack a picnic and off you go.
Brockenhurst also has a wonderful collection of coffee shops and cafes. Try Rosie Lea's Tea House & Bakery and The Buttery. There are super friendly pubs and restaurant’s serving great food, our favourites include The Snakecatcher, The Foresters Arms, Bistro 26 and a great Indian restaurant called Dynasty. There’s also a good fish and chip shop and Chinese take away.
There is parking for 2/3 cars on the gated private driveway.

Escape Gin Bar
(Less than a mile)
(5)
If you’re a gin lover, you will love this quaint bar nestled in the centre of Brockenhurst within the Thatched Cottage Hotel. Try a range of gins from their extensive list, including some excellent cocktails.
Escape Gin Bar (T: 01590 622005) 16 Brookley Road, Brockenhurst SO42 7RR
We went several times and had coffee, cakes, scones and a gin flight or two. My only point is we went back at the same time on each visit and personally I would have liked to be acknowledged as a return visitor. I’m not saying it was bad service but this would have been five star treatment
July 2023
Brilliant bar, just a shame it closes at 8.00 p.m.
August 2021
Great enjoyed lunch there.
June 2021
There is a major problem with staying at Homelands, which is going home! This home has been so tastefully and thoughtfully decorated, fitted and kitted out, it has been a privilege to stay here. I mean which other holiday let gives a Dyson fan, Sonos sound system, curved Samsung TV with sound bar etc. But the owners have some exquisite taste. the tiles in the cloakroom and bathrooms, the furniture in the main living room-our home will seem quite second rate when we go back! Lighting is obviously a passion of thee owners - stunning. We enjoyed the landscaped garden and even in October having teat and crumpets in the ante afternoon sun. Train noise absolutely not an issue. The Village hall was closed because of CoVid, so can't common if noise at night would be an issue. Beds amazingly comfy and great rain showers, What's not to like. OK if pushed the oven controls are not intuitive but the instructions work! We'll be back!!
October 2020
Unfortunately this bar was only opened for a couple of hours each day and at strange times and once we had got in from the day out and got ready, the pub was closed. Every pub in the village had a choice of different gins.
November 2019
The Snakecatcher

March 2023

October 2022
Very good and efficient staff despite being very busy on a Sunday evening. Pub was full inside and out. The food we had (scampi and burger) was Ok but not exceptional, the scampi were small and watery, burgers fine but have had meatier ones.
September 2022
Great beer , cider, gin n tonic . Excellent food and service
October 2021
Good pub food and a lovely garden
September 2021
We had dinner on hot rock plates, you have to cook your own food -I had fish, prawns and scallops and a side of veg. My husband had steak. By the time the food had cooked side vegetables had gone cold. This pub had a more varied menu for lunchtime. Friendly staff.
November 2019
Brilliant food, huge portions. Staff very friendly and helpful..

November 2017
Good food and good service. Music was a bit loud for us.

Possibly the greatest steak meal I have ever had. If you haven't tried the hot stone method of being served your steak dont miss it.

Britannia Thai (T: 01590 622459) 26 Lyndhurst Road, Brockenhurst SO42 7RL
We ordered takeaway whilst staying in Brockenhurst. You can order on line and then pick up your food (no delivery service). Our food was ready quickly and all the dishes we ordered were well cooked and really tasty. We would definitely use this Thai restaurant again.

May 2023
Excellent food and great service
April 2022
Absolutely delicious Thai food. Cannot wait to return
February 2022
Britannia Thai is a fantastic little restaurant within brockenhurst village. They offer both dine in and takeaway lunch and dinner services. The welcome on entering the restaurant is warm and genuine. The standard of food they provide is excellent and portion sizing is very generous. We can highly recommend the chicken satay and chicken Pad Thai noodles. Overall they provide fantastic value food. Definitely not to be missed when in brockenhurst.
July 2021
Very good food and service. Need to book.

(Less than a mile)
(39)
Traditional on the outside but modern and stylish on the inside, The Huntsman offers an extensive menu including a range of steaks and wood fired pizzas accompanied by a well chosen wine list, classic cocktails and a range of world beers.
The Huntsman of Brockenhurst (T: 01590 622225) Brockenhurst SO42 7RH

June 2023
Great pub, would recommed
May 2023
Lovely food and friendly staff
April 2023
We went to this pub for the Sunday Roast which was a great disappointment and not cheap. The vegetables were virtually inedible, a knife would not cut through them and the green beans had barely seen the water. The waiter knew nothing about the wines, there was no atmosphere and the service not good. When we complained they offered us more vegetables which we declined and eventually they deducted 20% off the main meals.
October 2022
Lovely food served here. Nice friendly staff and they love dogs. Big bonus for us as trying to find good food and dog friendly is not easy
October 2022
Busy pub with really good covered outdoor eating area, appeared that dogs were welcome. Separate outdoor garden area for just drinking. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was good, I had duck which came very pink so do say if you want it cooked through. Husband had fish and chips which was a plateful!.
September 2022
Great food and very good servy
August 2022
This was a VERY disappointing evening out. Having looked at the menu before we went some of us wanted pizza.......when we arrived the pizza oven was broken so no pizza available. In addition the 2 starters on the kids menu were garlic bread and vegetable sticks - with no pizza oven there was no garlic bread so vegetables the only option. We got put at a table that was wobbly so had to move. The cesar salad was also poor - dry chicken and missing several elements you would normally expect for a cesar salad. All in all an expensive, disappointing evening. We would not return if in the area again.
April 2022
Excellent
September 2021
When we arrived we were told that there were no mussels (apparently the waiter can't remember when they last had them). So we ordered chateaubriand - that was also not available. 'OK I will go with Ribeye but can I please swap the chips for salad'? Response - 'err sorry but the kitchen is quite busy so we can't swap anything...' At this point we wished we hadn't booked...! There are better places!
September 2021
Had a very bad experience at the Huntsman with an evening meal. The food was inedible sent it back..
September 2021
Lovely food and friendly staff
July 2021
Excellent pub. Within minutes walk from cottage. Food and staff good
June 2021
Lots of menu items unavailable (more than half) and quality of the remainder was poor.
June 2021
Very pleasant gastropub
June 2021
Excellent food and location was 100 yards from the house we were staying at.
June 2021
Excellent service. Our waiter was great and there was a lovely atmosphere. Fairly short menu. We felt the presentation of some dishes would have been greatly improved with additional colour by way of garnish/small salad.
May 2021
We had a fabulous Sunday lunch.. The staff were impeccable, nothing too much trouble. The food was fabulous. Very dog friendly. Would highly recommend.
September 2020
We had lunch here but it was a very limited menu-we had the sharing platter that was ok, but the evening food menu had more of a selection. Nice atmosphere.
November 2019
Very pleasant surroundings and good selection of food
September 2019
excellent food and excellent service
July 2019
This is the place for a really tasty pizza. They do a great range of lighter lunches aswell. Good selection of wines and beers
June 2019
We went as a family for Easter Sunday lunch. The food was excellent, fresh and hot. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble!
April 2019
Very popular so booked beforehand. Good food but quite slow service. Difficult to just go for a drink as for some reason don't have separate lounge
August 2018
This establishment came as a surprise. I took a friend there for lunch and we were much impressed by the interior and enjoyed our meal very much.
April 2018
We ate on one night and went for drinks on another night Was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening, but we were still seated at a pleasant, albeit non official dining table We were immediately welcomed and drinks orders taken, in a friendly but efficient manner We were left to choose our food, the children’s menus selected by our two girls (aged 10) were very good and ample, they came with a squash drink and ice cream for pudding I chose the sea bream and mash which was excellent, my partner chos the chicken which was also very good Service throughout was friendly and efficient We returned two days later , just for drinks, I don’t get the feeling that drinkers are their target customers, as the are was much colder and less welcoming than the dining area, I had a real ale which was very pleasant, my partner had a cocktail which was good, the two girls had mock tails, which were nowhere near the standard of our previous visit, no orange in one and didn’t taste as good, girls were a little disappointed This could be down to barman being under training, which to be fair he did explain he was new Overall an excellent venue, we shall be returning
February 2018
Great food and really good service.
February 2018
Great food and family friendly Small area allocated for dogs but often no space available so not dog friendly inside
February 2018
Only about 30 metres walk... Fabulous food great atmosphere. But book to make sure of a table as its very popular on Thurs - Sunday evenings
December 2017
Very good standard of food and pleasant, helpful staff. Thoroughly recommend!
December 2017
It was our first visit to this venue since the name change. The menu appeared a little more upmarket, unfortunately the service wasn't. They took our credit card when taking our order, but when it came to paying our bill we were told they were busy and we had to find the waiter who took it. In all it took something like 30 minutes trying to pay our bill, not the best way to finish an evening with 3 small children wanting their beds.
August 2017
we ate twice at The Huntsman. First time in garden as we had our dog. food was lovely but service very slow. second time we ate inside with all the family. Meal was superb and service excellent and waiter was very attentive
August 2017
Nice restaurant, very nicely decorated, good ambiance and service. We went for a dinner with our kids (3). The food kids menu, was perfect, my wife and daughter order the trout and duck both very good dishes. I ordered the rib eye, the menu says it has 35 days of maturing. The quality was bad, I would even doubt it was steak it almost looked like processed meet. My recommendation stick to the other dishes on the menu and avoid the steak selection. The rest of the experience was very positive.

July 2022
A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.
October 2021
One of my favourite places
July 2021
Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.
September 2020
Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.
September 2019
Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s
April 2019
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach
March 2019
Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.
December 2017
Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc
November 2017
Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.
June 2017
Barton on Sea
(7 miles)
(2)
A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.
A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.
June 2023
Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.
April 2019
Highcliffe Beach
(8 miles)
Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.
To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.
Highcliffe Castle Beach
(8 miles)
(3)
A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.
Very picturesque beach with great access, looks good for a beach day
October 2021
Lovely
April 2019
Lovely clean sandy beach and a really i would highly recommend this spot for your car to break down takes the ouch out of waiting for the recovery truck
April 2017
Avon Beach
(9 miles)
(2)
A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all. For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months. This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.
Nice beach with good facilities
April 2023
Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

April 2024
Our second time at this lovely bungalow. Spotlessly clean, warm and nice position for walks and the town centre. Weather wasn't too bad. Did the Brockenhurst Trail - very interesting especially St Nicholas Church. Thank you for letting us stay in this special place.
April 2024
Our first time in Broclea and we loved it. A beautiful well kept and well equipped property. We've had a lovey relaxing week. Great Sunday lunch at Balmer Lawn and our usual run to the coast to Barton on Sea Cliff House Hotel which we do every time we stay in the Forest. We look forward to returning next year.
April 2024
Broclea was spotless on arrival. Great equipment and kitchen utilities. Lovely and warm Great location Lovely garden. Thank you
January 2024
We can not fault the location & standard of the accommodation. We had a lovely stay and enjoyed exploring the New Forest from here. The only thing that could have been better was the weather ?
November 2023
This was a gorgeous bungalow with excellent facilities and furnishings. The location was great for the village and surrounding area and the local donkeys were a bonus! We had a lovely stay here and the owner was very easy & pleasant to communicate with. I'm sure we will return at some point and would definitely recommend staying here.
November 2023

July 2023
We had a great relaxing stay at Broclea which is a beautiful property at the end of a quiet lane. This is our second visit and would definitely visit again. Yes you do get some noise from the trains, but we didn't find it intrusive at all. The property is very well furnished and equipped. The welcome pack is amazing, the best we have had. The outside space is very nice and the patio area at the back is lovely to sit out and enjoy, the padded seat covers provided for the chairs make it even more comfortable. Whilst the weather was mixed whilst we were in the New Forest, it didn't keep us in. We went to Lymington, both the town and the marina, bath street car part is an ideal car park for the marina. We also visited Milford on sea, Keyhaven, New Milton, Barton on Sea and Poole. We did not eat out whilst we were there so cannot recommend, but Brockenhurst is very handy for all your needs with a small Tesco, Coop, lovely bakery and butchers. Would definitely recommend Broclea and the New Forest.
July 2023
We are so happy to have found this cottage - peaceful and relaxing. (The trains didn't worry us). We've been coming to the New Forest for nearly 3yrs for our holidays and love the whole place and lifestyle it offers. Now we have found "Broclea" we would love to return (everything you need is here!

We had such a magical time, it really felt like we were at home. It was beautiful. The beds were very cosy, the garden was a masterpiece. The locals were so nice. My daughter loved her cosy room. It was an amazing stay.
August 2021
We had a lovely stay at the property. Our daughter enjoyed the croquet. We used the local transport rather than driving everywhere and visited Lymington by train and Lyndhurst by bus. We sampled the local gin bar and the Indian restaurant, both fab. Very comfortable property and than you for the welcome pack. We will definitely come back.
July 2021
We had a fabulous stay at Broclea, which is a wonderful property - clean and beautifully decorated.

We shared a Ploughman’s platter here and it was delicious- definitely enough for a lunch for two. Great beer and wine to go with it. Great service and nice surroundings.
April 2024
Had a really good experience at The Huntsman. Staff very pleasant and attentive. Food and drink very good and reasonable value. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

July 2019

Milford on Sea
(7 miles)
(16)
A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.
Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.
March 2024
A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.
August 2023
Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.
June 2023
Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.
June 2023
Brilliant beach.
September 2022
Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away
June 2019

April 2019

April 2017
Avon Beach
(9 miles)
